Turning City Slickers into Eco Warriors

Joy Schaa Chance 24 August, 2023 Malta

Every summer, after our team has wrapped up our busy incentive and event season, we come together for a fun day out of the office. This year, we decided to do something different and support Mark Galea Pace and his foundation, Coast is Clear with a kayak sea clean-up.

Mark is a Maltese national who has been recognized by the late Queen Elizabeth II as the winner of the Commonwealth’s Point of Light Award for his environmental contribution to the local community.

In 2018, Mark set out to kayak around the Maltese Islands, picking up rubbish from the sea and beaches. He collected 52 bags and 20 jerrycans of rubbish, and has since embarked on extensive solo clean-ups (always accompanied by his canine friend Gorg) around the Maltese Islands, inspiring large groups of volunteers to join him in his efforts.

Our Experience

We arrived by boat in the afternoon to the north of Malta and found Mark and his dog waiting for us with lots of plastic bags and kayaks. We set off to explore some of the most beautiful secluded caves and bays along Paradise Bay.

As we kayaked, we wondered if we would see any rubbish, as the sea beneath us was crystal clear. But when we finally arrived in Paradise Bay, we were stunned to find tucked-away pebble beaches covered in plastic bottle caps, plastic bottles, ropes, containers, shoes, and all kinds of other rubbish.

We quickly got to work filling up bags of rubbish. It was hard work under the summer sun, but it was also incredibly rewarding. After experiencing the kayak clean-up first-hand and seeing Mark’s passion for our coast, we are thrilled to partner with his foundation Coast is Clear to promote this activity in our client proposals. We hope that together, we can make a positive impact on our islands.

The Activity

If you’re looking for a fun and rewarding way to spend some time out at sea, we highly recommend this adventurous activity. You’ll get to explore some of Malta’s most beautiful coastal areas, while making a difference for the environment. The activity can be done nearly anywhere along the coast of Malta, Gozo, and Comino. You can choose to kayak, stand-up paddleboard, or even walk. And the activity can be completely tailored to your requirements.
