Discover Madeira With All Your Senses

Joy Schaa Chance 15 May, 2023 Portugal

The island of Madeira, home to Portuguese settlers since 1425 is a land rich in biodiversity, both at sea and on land. It provides a distinct landscape due to it’s subtropical climate that is unique to Europe, and upon visiting it is easy to understand why it is continuously voted as one of the world’s favourite island destinations. The vast amount of natural resources found here make these islands a bountiful paradise for all who inhabit and for those visiting this pristine wonderland. The MICE industry is no different and data suggests that companies will opt to offer their team a unique location to host their events, combining a work agenda and an unparalleled experience for all involved.

The stunning island of Madeira

801 km2 and a whole lot to SEE.

Marvel at the distinct landscape, from lush botanical gardens filled with an abundance of tropical fruit to the crystal clear waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Often described as ‘The Floating Garden’, Madeira’s dramatic beauty will tantalize your senses in every way. The raw displays of nature can be found in every direction and the tropical and phenomenal landscape will no doubt entice anyone to venture on one of the many impressive hiking trails that this garden-island has to offer. These trails, known as Levada walks, vary in difficulty and terrain but whatever the route that is decided upon, one can expect the most breath-taking trails which will always end with a dazzling viewpoint.

How about a TASTE of Madeira?

Taste the extraordinary flavours on offer, from the unusual Espada fish- the national Madeiran dish made from Black Scabbard and cooked with bananas, to the world-famous Madeira wine, a fortified wine that is celebrated for it’s fascinating flavours. The variety of colourful fruits and vegetables that dominate local markets, restaurants and homes are incorporated into the Madeira cuisine in many creative ways, making this island an exceptional gastronomic exploration.

Another distinctive aspect of the island are it’s volcanic beaches that spread across many kilometres of it’s rugged coastline. These black pebble beaches, distinct in colour and rich in minerals, provide a stark contract to the lush green cliff faces that Madeira is adorned with. They offer a special scenic playground in the form of natural lava rock pools, where visitors and locals come to bathe and relax surrounded by the unruly beauty.

SMELL the sweet scent of Geraniums (and many other exotic plants and flowers!)

Once arriving in Madeira, one can come to the conclusion that it makes a lot of sense that the island is home to more than 2000 exotic plants from all continents, situated beautifully in the Madeira Botanical Gardens. While the national flower is the Strelitzia, also known as the Bird of Paradise flower (very fitting indeed), visitors will be more struck by the delicious Geranium scent that permeates the land as those flowers bloom all year round.

By investing resources into research and devising a mission plan whereby they preserve endangered species, Madeira has an envious conservation area which has become a must-see for anyone who visits!

And what does Madeira SOUND like, one might ask?

Quite literally the best sounds one can hope for: singing birds, distant waves crashing against imposing cliffs, the gentle rush of the famous levadas (ancient water channels) and the sweet sound of silence one experiences when reaching the summit of that hike and staring out at the glorious views beyond. This green-oasis is diverse and fascinating but most of all it is calming and a comfort; it’s the ideal combination of work and play, of focus and quiet contemplation.
