Earlier this month the Malta filming of a new Hollywood Blockbuster came to an end. “13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi” is the biggest production ever filmed in Malta since the creation of the Malta Film Commission. The American action thriller directed by Michael Bay who is best known for “Pearl Harbour” and “Armageddon” tells the story of a security team defending the American diplomatic compound in Benghazi during the 2013 attack.
Filming in Malta started in April and mainly took place in Mosta. Other locations included Valletta and Manoel Island. It is estimated that the project boosted Malta’s economy with a direct injection of $ 50 million. Servicing a production of that scale, Malta’s Film Commissioner Engelbert Grech has high hopes for future projects. “A film of this magnitude will most certainl boost Malta’s reputation as a film friendly destination. […] With directors like Michael Bay, Steven Spielberg, Ridley Scott and Kevin Reynolds shooting on the island, Malta is living up to its name as the Mini Hollywood of the Mediterranean.”, Mr. Grech told the Malta Independent.
